Leave a mark - Heroes of the siege of Leningrad in Rishon Lezion

introduction

About 750,000 people died, most of them from starvation, during the siege of the city of Leningrad that lasted more than two years during World War II. Modern history records this as the heaviest civilian casualty rate in any city.
The city of Leningrad also had an extensive Jewish community, some of which survived the siege and later immigrated to Israel.   "The Autographers" - The Autographers is an international artistic documentation project that aims to connect the community to its unique history.   In collaboration with the Municipality of Rishon Lezion, we went on a documentary trip and met those who were then boys and girls, boys and girls, and who today wanted to share their memories with the younger generation. They recount how the home front became a bomb-absorbing front within the city walls of Leningrad that was besieged by the German army but not occupied. Some lost mother or father, and found themselves alone, struggling to survive hunger, cold and fighting._ cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_
World War II Veterans Status Law stipulates that World War II veterans (so-called "veterans") in Israel are those who during the Second World War were in active service in one of the Allied armies, or in the underground fighting the Nazis, or who were recognized by the Soviet authorities as the city of Leningrad. During the siege of it.
The Israeli public became acquainted with veterans mainly thanks to the waves of immigration to Israel in the 1990s, with   the disintegration of the former Soviet Union and the breaking of the Iron Curtain. Since most of them did not speak Hebrew, their story was not revealed to the Israeli public. This moving product comes to share their personal testimony about the historical event, and describes the instinct for human survival, the heroism that is revealed in a time of difficulty and the hope that was in their hearts for the day when the war will end.   We thank the documenters who shared with us their personal history, and the translators who helped bridge the language differences_ cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_

salutation

The "Autographers" project gives us a unique glimpse into the painful history of World War II and this time with a spotlight on the survivors of the military siege of the city of Leningrad in the Soviet Union. A siege that claimed the lives of more than 750,000 people for about two years. The documentarians, who were then only children, chose to build their lives in Rishon Lezion and in many respects are a 'walking history'.

At this time, as we face a new reality in the shadow of the Corona, I see great importance in this venture that gives a place of honor to the community of Soviet immigrants in our city. The products were combined into the exhibition   'Children of the siege of Leningrad', which excites everyone who is exposed to it and who will reach the younger generation in our city. It is our moral duty to share the documented stories, to remember the price charged by World War II from the world in general and the Jewish community in particular and to instill values of respect for heroism and solidarity.   This venture is also an opportunity to miraculously overwhelm the veterans living in the city, those who fought in armies and undergrounds, and those who were in the home front like Leningrad siege survivors and survived thanks to resourcefulness, solidity and hope.

I thank all those involved in the craft, first and foremost - to the documented for their contribution and willingness to share their story,   to the Absorption Division and its head, Ms. Tanya Steif who led the activity, , To the absorption portfolio holder Yevgeny Brahman and the head of the community director, Iris Aronin, who supported the project.

your,
Rz artificial
Mayor of Rishon Lezion
